Cnicus benedictus, also known as St. Benedict's thistle, blessed thistle, holy thistle, and spotted thistle, is a thistle-like plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean region and has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America, where it is often considered a noxious weed. It is the only species in its genus, with other related species being reclassified to different genera. This annual plant can grow up to 60 cm tall and has yellow flowers surrounded by spiny bracts. It is not edible, but has been used for medicinal purposes, particularly as a galactagogue and for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In literature, it is referenced in Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing.
