Torilis japonica, also known as erect hedgeparsley or Japanese hedge parsley, is a flowering plant in the celery family. It can complete its life cycle in one or two growing seasons, depending on its location. It is typically found in disturbed areas and can thrive in a variety of habitats, making it an aggressive invasive species in North America. This plant is a threat to the environment and can outcompete native vegetation. It produces a compound called torilin, which has potential for fighting cancer. Japanese hedge parsley is commonly misidentified with other species and has been introduced to North America for unknown reasons. In Wisconsin, it is listed as an invasive species and there are various non-chemical and chemical methods for controlling its spread. This plant has also been used in Chinese traditional medicine and has shown potential for treating cancer due to its ability to inhibit the growth of blood vessels in tumors.
