Ethnobotanical Uses
In a range of herbal traditions, Angelica archangelica has been prepared as infusions of the fresh or dried leaf to ease digestive discomfort, reduce griping, and support convalescence (according to Grieve’s A Modern Herbal, 1931). The dried root has likewise been taken as a warm decoction, often flavored with caraway or ginger, for indigestion, gas, and colicky pain (Grieve, 1931). In the Nordic region, it was historically chewed as a fresh root or infused as a tea in a “bear’s root” drink to revive vigor after strenuous work and to warm the circulation (according to L. H. Fernie in Herb Simples, 1899). Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, both the seed and root were prepared as teas for colds, coughs, and stomach complaints (Bennett et al., 2021). In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried root is decocted in water to support digestion, dispel wind-cold, and resolve phlegm (EMEA Herbal Monograph, 2008). In western herbalism the whole plant, especially the root, was macerated in 25–45% alcohol to make a tincture used for appetite loss and flatulence (Grieve, 1931).
A practical recipe for a mild leaf tea is to pour about 250 mL of just-off-the-boil water over 1–2 teaspoons (2–4 g) of dried angelica leaf, steep 10–15 minutes, and drink 1 cup up to three times daily. For a classic bitter digestive tea, steep 1–2 teaspoons (about 1–2 g) of chopped dried root in the same volume of hot water for 10–20 minutes. Many herbalists prefer a root decoction, simmering 1–2 g of chopped root in 250 mL of water for 10–15 minutes, then straining and drinking 1 cup 2–3 times daily. For a tincture, a 1:5 plant to alcohol ratio by weight with approximately 30% ethanol is commonly used: macerate 200 g of dried root in 1 L of solvent for 4–6 weeks, shaking weekly, then press and strain; a typical adult dose is 2–3 mL (30–90 drops) in a little water up to three times daily (Grieve, 1931; Bennett et al., 2021). Because angelica contains furanocoumarins, large or prolonged doses are best avoided; pregnant and nursing people should not use it, and those on anticoagulants or photosensitizing drugs should seek professional advice before use.
Well-established constituents that plausibly underpin these effects are bitter coumarins and coumarin glycosides such as osthole and archangelicin, together with furanocoumarins like bergapten and psoralen; essential oil components including pinene, limonene, and borneol; and flavonoids such as luteolin and quercetin-3-O-glucoside (Eich et al., 2005; Bisset & Wichtl, 2001). These compounds contribute a classic bitter, carminative profile and offer antioxidant, antispasmodic, and expectorant activities that align with the traditional uses.
Modern relevance is actively discussed in contemporary pharmacognosy; in vitro and animal work continues to explore the digestive, spasmolytic, and respiratory effects of archangelicin and related furanocoumarins, and the species remains a staple in European, Nordic, and Chinese herbal practice, with roots and tinctures widely available from licensed suppliers (Bennett et al., 2021).
