Equisetum arvense, also known as field horsetail or common horsetail, is a perennial plant found in the Northern Hemisphere. It has separate sterile and fertile stems, with the fertile ones appearing in early spring and the sterile ones persisting through the summer. It is often confused with mare's tail and has a deep root system that makes it difficult to control. The plant has been described by Linnaeus and has a high number of chromosomes. It grows in a variety of conditions and is found in many countries around the world. E. arvense has been used for medicinal purposes and as a vegetable in some cultures. It is also used in horticulture and agriculture as a natural fungicide. However, it is toxic to livestock and is considered an invasive species in some areas. Recent research has shown some potential health benefits of the plant.
