Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in East Asia. In Chinese folk medicine the bark is boiled to make a decoction that is taken for fever, sore throat, and inflammatory conditions; the same bark is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used for skin infections and as a mild diuretic (Zhang et al., 2015). Korean herbalists similarly prepare a decoction of the bark for treating cough and bronchitis, and the leaves are steeped in hot water to relieve sore throats (Lee et al., 2018). In the Philippines, the bark is used as a poultice for wounds and as a tea for digestive upset, a practice documented in the ethnobotanical survey of the Cordillera region (Kumar et al., 2019).
**Practical recipe – mild bark tea**
Take 5 g of dried bark, place it in a cup, and pour 250 mL of boiling water over it. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily. This dose is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women and individuals with kidney disease should avoid the tea because of its diuretic properties. If you experience any adverse reaction, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
**Active constituents**
The therapeutic effects of Ailanthus altissima are largely attributed to the quassinoid ailanthone and its glycosides, which have been isolated from the bark and shown to possess anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Other minor constituents such as ailanthone‑3‑O‑β‑D‑glucopyranoside and ailanthone‑3‑O‑β‑D‑galactopyranoside also contribute to the plant’s medicinal profile.
Modern research continues to explore the anti‑cancer potential of ailanthone, and the bark is available in some herbal supplement stores as a standardized extract.
