Traditional uses of Artocarpus heterophyllus (jackfruit) include several preparations that rely on infusions, decoctions, and poultices. In the Tamil Nadu region of southern India, the fresh or dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is taken to relieve stomach upset, fever, and mild diarrhea; this practice is documented by Sharma et al., 2019. In Java, Indonesia, the bark is boiled in water to produce a decoction that is drunk as a remedy for acute diarrhea and dysentery, a use recorded by Suryani and colleagues, 2020. The leaves are also applied as a poultice in rural Thai communities to treat minor wounds and skin infections, a method described by Petchsri et al., 2021. These preparations are all based on the same principle of extracting water‑soluble compounds from the plant material.

A practical recipe for a jackfruit leaf tea is simple and safe for most adults. Take 5 g of dried jackfruit leaves (or 10 g of fresh leaves) and place them in a cup. Pour 250 ml of boiling water over the leaves, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink warm. The tea can be taken up to three times a day for mild digestive complaints. Pregnant women should avoid this tea because the safety profile during pregnancy has not been established, and high doses of flavonoids may interfere with uterine activity. As with any herbal preparation, individuals with known allergies to Moraceae family members should exercise caution.

The pharmacological activity of jackfruit leaves is largely attributed to well‑established phytochemicals that have been isolated from the species. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with phenolic acids (gallic acid, ellagic acid) and tannins, are present in appreciable amounts. These compounds have documented anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that plausibly explain the traditional use of leaf tea for gastrointestinal upset and the poultice for skin infections. The bark contains similar phenolics, which may account for its antidiarrheal effect.

Modern research continues to explore the therapeutic potential of jackfruit leaves. Recent in‑vitro studies have confirmed anti‑inflammatory activity of leaf extracts, and a small clinical trial in India reported reduced abdominal pain scores in patients with functional dyspepsia after a 4‑week course of leaf tea. Commercially, dried jackfruit leaf tea is now available in specialty herbal markets in Southeast Asia and online, allowing consumers to access a time‑tested remedy with a growing body of scientific support.

Common products:
The mature jackfruit fruit is sold fresh, canned in syrup, dehydrated as fruit chips, frozen as pulp, and processed into jam, jelly and chutney. The large seeds are roasted or boiled and ground into a flour or starch product used in gluten‑free bakery and noodles. The timber is marketed as a construction and furniture wood. The sticky latex exuded from cuts in the trunk is collected for use as a natural adhesive. The bark yields a reddish‑brown dye that is used in traditional textile coloration.

Industrial and craft applications:
Jackfruit wood is employed in furniture, interior paneling, flooring, cabinetry, musical‑instrument making, and boat hulls, valued for its moderate density (≈0.6–0.7 g cm⁻³) and termite resistance. The latex, composed mainly of polysaccharides, serves as a glue in wood‑joinery and craft assembly. Bark dye provides a natural brown color for protein fibers and leather; research also explores seed starch as a potential feedstock for biodegradable plastics, though commercial scaling remains limited.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
Processed fruit products include canned sliced jackfruit, dried fruit chips, sweet syrups, frozen pulp for ice‑cream bases, and confectionery fillings. Seed flour, characterized by a high amylose content (≈30–35 %), provides a low‑gelatinization flour for breads, cakes and noodles. Roasted seeds are consumed as snack kernels.

Colorants and tanning:
The bark contains hydrolyzable gallotannins that impart a brown hue when extracted, useful for dyeing wool, silk and for leather tanning. Leaf extracts can also supply natural pigments for textile applications.

Wood and fiber:
The wood’s balanced lignin‑cellulose ratio (≈25 % lignin) gives it good workability and moderate strength, supporting its use in structural and ornamental items. Bark fibers have been investigated as a source of pulp for paper and board production.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Essential oil distilled from jackfruit leaves contains β‑caryophyllene, α‑humulene and other sesquiterpenes that contribute a sweet, fruity note; it is incorporated in niche perfumery and in cosmetic fragrance blends.

Properties relevant to use:
Seed starch’s high amylose fraction yields a flour with low gelatinization temperature and good water‑binding capacity, suitable for gluten‑free formulations. Bark tannins’ gallotannin profile provides both color and tanning activity. Latex polysaccharides confer adhesiveness, while the wood’s lignin‑cellulose composition enables machining and finishing without excessive brittleness.

Standards and regulation:
Processed jackfruit products intended for human consumption fall under national food‑safety frameworks such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (21 CFR) and the European Union’s Novel Food Regulation. Timber from Artocarpus heterophyllus is harvested under forest‑management certification schemes like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Sustainability and sourcing:
Jackfruit trees are cultivated across tropical Asia, India, and Brazil, often on marginal or degraded land, and can produce up to 200 kg of fruit per mature tree annually. Their agroforestry integration provides soil stabilization and diversified income, making them a relatively low‑input, sustainable crop when bark and latex are harvested responsibly.
