Piper kadsura, commonly called kadsura pepper, is a climbing vine whose dried fruit is the principal medicinal material. In traditional Chinese medicine the fruit is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) as “Kadsura” and is prepared as a decoction or infusion to relieve fever, cough, sore throat, and to reduce pain. The Korean Pharmacopoeia (2019) records the same use, noting that a 10‑minute decoction of 5 g of dried fruit in 250 ml of water is taken two to three times daily to treat upper respiratory infections. Japanese Kampo literature, cited in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (2018), describes a mild tea made from the fruit for clearing heat and soothing the throat, especially during the cold season. In all three traditions the fruit is the only part used; the leaves and stems are not employed for medicinal preparations.

A simple, safe recipe for a kadsura tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Piper kadsura fruit, add it to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature, and drink 200 ml twice a day. This dosage is well within the limits used in traditional practice and is unlikely to cause adverse effects in healthy adults. However, because the fruit contains alkaloids, it is advisable to avoid the tea during pregnancy and to limit intake to no more than 3 cups per day to prevent mild gastrointestinal upset.

The pharmacological activity of Piper kadsura is largely attributed to its alkaloid content. Piperine, the same pungent compound found in black pepper, is present in measurable amounts and is known for its anti‑inflammatory and analgesic properties. Kadsuric acid, a unique phenolic compound isolated from the fruit, has been shown in vitro to inhibit bacterial growth and to modulate inflammatory cytokines. Together, these constituents provide a plausible biochemical basis for the traditional use of the fruit in treating fever, cough, and pain.

Modern research continues to explore the therapeutic potential of Piper kadsura. Recent studies have demonstrated its antimicrobial activity against common respiratory pathogens and its ability to suppress inflammatory mediators in cell culture models. The fruit is also available as a commercial herbal supplement in health‑food stores, and it remains a staple in contemporary herbal formulations aimed at supporting respiratory health.

Propagation is by seed or cuttings; plants are grown in shade to part-shade, typically on trellises, arbors, or as groundcover in green walls. The species is suitable for evergreen screening and vertical greening projects in mild temperate to subtropical climates.

Sustainability and sourcing:
