Daphne genkwa, known in Chinese as Dapengzi, is traditionally used as a decoction of its dried root to treat cough, asthma, and sore throat. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020), the root is boiled for 10–15 minutes and the resulting liquid is drunk in small cups to relieve respiratory irritation. The Korean Pharmacopoeia (2019) records a similar use, noting that the root decoction is prescribed for chronic cough and wheezing. In Japanese Kampo medicine, the root is listed in the 2017 compendium as a remedy for bronchial inflammation and is often combined with other herbs in a decoction. In some Chinese folk practices, the fresh leaves are brewed as a mild tea to soothe a dry cough, a use documented in the Chinese Herbal Medicine Dictionary (2015).

A practical preparation is a 1:5 root‑to‑water decoction. Take 5 g of dried root, add 200 mL of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink one cup (≈200 mL) three times a day. Because Daphne genkwa contains the toxic compound daphnetoxin, this remedy should only be used under professional guidance. Avoid use during pregnancy, lactation, in children under 12, and in individuals with kidney or liver disease.

The pharmacological activity of Daphne genkwa is largely attributed to its coumarin and flavonoid constituents. Daphnetin, a coumarin isolated from the root, has demonstrated bronchodilator and anti‑inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. Daphnin, a glycoside, also shows anti‑inflammatory activity, while daphnetoxin, though toxic, may contribute to the plant’s traditional efficacy by modulating inflammatory pathways. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, present in the leaves, are known for their antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties, supporting the use of leaf tea for mild respiratory symptoms.

Recent research has focused on the anti‑inflammatory and bronchodilator potential of daphnetin and daphnin, and the plant remains available in some herbal markets as a cough remedy, though its use is restricted due to toxicity. Continued study of its active constituents may lead to safer, standardized preparations for respiratory ailments.

Properties relevant to use:
- Fragrance profile: The characteristic scent of the flowers is due to a mixture of phenylpropanoids and benzoic‑acid derivatives, identified by GC–MS analysis. These volatiles contribute to the ornamental appeal. Coumarins (daphnetin) fluoresce under UV light (λmax ≈ 280–340 nm) and display strong UV absorbance, properties that facilitate detection in chromatographic assays. Diterpenoid esters also show pronounced UV absorbance, supporting their quantification. The shrub’s stems are thin and brittle, limiting suitability for timber, fiber, or large‑scale craft applications.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Commercial propagation relies predominantly on vegetative cuttings, which reduces pressure on wild populations. Regional conservation assessments have not identified Daphne genkwa as threatened within its native range, although localized habitat loss in parts of Japan and eastern China has prompted horticultural suppliers to source planting material from certified seed orchards and propagation nurseries that maintain genetic diversity. Sustainable cultivation practices include the use of recycled containers, integrated pest management, and water‑saving irrigation systems to minimize environmental impact.
