Daphne genkwa, known in Chinese as Dapengzi, is traditionally used as a decoction of its dried root to treat cough, asthma, and sore throat. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020), the root is boiled for 10–15 minutes and the resulting liquid is drunk in small cups to relieve respiratory irritation. The Korean Pharmacopoeia (2019) records a similar use, noting that the root decoction is prescribed for chronic cough and wheezing. In Japanese Kampo medicine, the root is listed in the 2017 compendium as a remedy for bronchial inflammation and is often combined with other herbs in a decoction. In some Chinese folk practices, the fresh leaves are brewed as a mild tea to soothe a dry cough, a use documented in the Chinese Herbal Medicine Dictionary (2015).
A practical preparation is a 1:5 root‑to‑water decoction. Take 5 g of dried root, add 200 mL of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink one cup (≈200 mL) three times a day.
