Muntingia is a genus of plants in the family Muntingiaceae, consisting of only one species, Muntingia calabura. It is native to the Neotropics and has been widely introduced in other tropical areas. The plant was named after Abraham Munting and is known for its edible fruit. It is a shrub or tree with spreading branches and leaves that are covered in short hairs. The flowers are small and white, and the fruit is red and about 1.5 cm wide. Muntingia calabura is native to southern Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and western South America, but has been introduced in Southeast Asia and other tropical regions. It is used for timber and fuel, and its fruits, leaves, bark, and flowers have traditional medicinal uses. The tree is also planted for shade and as an ornamental species, and its fallen fruits attract fish. Muntingia calabura has potential for restoring disturbed areas and providing shelter for wildlife. It can be propagated from seed, seedlings, or cuttings and has cultural significance, as seen in the title of Sri Lankan author Carl Muller's novel, The Jam Fruit Tree.
