Muntingia calabura (Jamaican cherry) is widely used in the Caribbean for its mild laxative and stomach‑soothing properties. Among the Afro‑Caribbean communities of Trinidad and Tobago, the ripe fruit is ground and mixed with water to make a decoction that is drunk to relieve constipation (Bennett et al., 2021). In the Dominican Republic, the leaves are steeped in hot water to produce a tea that is taken for abdominal cramps and diarrhea (Pérez et al., 2018). In coastal Belize, the bark is boiled with water and the resulting infusion is used as a topical poultice for skin irritations and minor wounds (Garcia et al., 2019).

A simple, safe preparation is a fruit tea: take 10 g of fresh or dried fruit, add 250 mL of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink one cup per day. The dose is well tolerated in adults; pregnant women should avoid large quantities because of the mild laxative effect. The tea can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.

Phytochemical analysis has identified several flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol) and triterpenoids (oleanolic acid) in the fruit and leaves. These compounds are known to have anti‑inflammatory and antispasmodic activities that likely underlie the traditional use for gastrointestinal discomfort.

Muntingia calabura remains a popular home remedy in the Caribbean, and its fruit is also sold commercially as a natural laxative supplement in several Caribbean markets.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Edible fruit for fresh consumption, jams, syrups, and juice concentrates; planted as an ornamental and used for shade and rapid vegetative cover.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- Fruit harvested seasonally; pulp is eaten fresh or processed into jams, syrups, and beverages (e.g., juices or nectars). The high natural sugar content supports fermentable feedstocks for ethanol production and can serve as animal feed or silage adjuncts.

Colorants and tanning:
- Bark and roots contain tannins used in leather tanning; bark extracts have been evaluated for dye potential on protein fibers, producing yellow to brown hues.

Wood and fiber:
- Sapwood and small-dimension logs used for light framing, crates, and non-durable items; also valued as fuelwood and charcoal. The rapid growth and coppicing habit support short-rotation supply. Scientific studies cite moderate mechanical properties (e.g., modulus of rupture ≈50–60 MPa; modulus of elasticity ≈5–7 GPa) and lignin content in the ≈20–28% range, providing a workable fuel and pulpwood profile; specific fiber metrics are species-averaged rather than measured on this taxon.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
- Leaves and flowers yield essential oils; leaf oil compositions reported include α-pinene, β-caryophyllene, limonene, and spathulenol, suitable for fragrance or flavoring blends rather than therapeutic use.

Scientific/model-organism use:
- Listed as a model in understory ecology and seed dispersal research; referenced for its role in urban forestry trials and biodiversity plots, with genetic resources indicated in neotropical germplasm collections.

Properties relevant to use:
- Rapid growth and prolific fruiting; fruit with high soluble sugars; bark/root tannins suitable for leather tanning; wood with moderate mechanical strength and lignin/cellulose composition compatible with pulp and fuel uses.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Often spontaneous on disturbed sites and in urban settings; short rotations and robust propagation favor managed plantings for fruit and fuel supply; overexploitation can occur in some locales, warranting local monitoring of harvest intensity.
