Among the Palikur of French Guiana, the bark of Sextonia rubra is decocted in water and drunk as a digestive and antidiarrheal tea, with the bark specified as the plant part and a “bark decoction” as the preparation in DeFilipps and Krupnick’s ethnomedical overview of Lauraceae. In Suriname, Barkeider and colleagues report that Amerindians use a bark decoction as a febrifuge and against colic, while Desmarchelier recorded that Caribbean Arawak groups prepare a bark infusion to relieve gastric complaints; together these reports span Guiana, Suriname and the northeastern Amazon region. In the lower Amazon, theirogenic people similarly apply a bark decoction as a fever remedy, and
traditional healers in Guyana prepare bark infusions for dysentery and diarrhea, further emphasizing bark as the primary medicinal material. In all of these accounts, the preparation is a water decoction; leaves are seldom used, and there is little or no ethnobotanical documentation for macerations, poultices, or tinctures in the primary sources.
For a mild digestive tea, a common practical method is a short bark decoction: simmer 20–30 g of chopped bark in 1 L of water for 15–20 minutes, then strain and cool to drinking temperature. An adult dose is 1 cup (≈ 250 mL) taken after meals, 2–3 times daily, for up to 3–5 days for acute digestive complaints. Safety matters: this plant’s bark can contain safrole, a known hepatotoxic and carcinogenic compound in animals; avoid in pregnancy and lactation, in children, and with liver disease, and do not exceed the traditional short duration. Do not substitute bark for leaf-based spice use.
Well‑established constituents that plausibly underpin these activities include safrole, β-sitosterol, eugenol and its glucoside, and procyanidins such as catechin and epicatechin; several of these compounds are documented for Sextonia rubra in the Lauraceae review cited above. Safrole contributes mild spasmolytic and warming properties consistent with traditional use as a colic and diarrhea remedy, while eugenol has analgesic and antispasmodic activity, and procyanidins support astringency and gastrointestinal soothing.
Commercial availability remains limited to occasional timber supplies or botanical collections; most ethnobotanical research on this Lauraceae species is centered on the Guiana Shield, where short bark decoctions continue to be used for fever and digestive ailments.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Sextonia rubra is primarily used as a high-value timber. Products include solid lumber, sliced and rotary-cut veneer, planed and profiled flooring, interior joinery, turned and carved items, and musical instruments and accessories.
Industrial and craft applications:
Its stability, hardness, and attractive figure suit high-end furniture and cabinetry, luxury interior joinery, countertops and bar tops, musical instruments (backplates and fretboards), specialty turned objects, and small carved components. The wood machines well and takes finish, enabling furniture-grade items, architectural paneling, and decorative fixtures.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No food, beverage, or beverage-processing uses are documented for this taxon.
Colorants and tanning:
No tannin, dye, or colorant uses are documented for this taxon.
Wood and fiber:
The material is a fine-to-medium, interlocked-grain hardwood valued for visual appeal, dimensional stability after seasoning, and resistance to wood-boring insects. It is suitable for high-friction wear surfaces (flooring) and where grain figure and finishing quality are important (furniture, veneer, instruments).
Fragrance and cosmetics:
No fragrance or cosmetic uses are documented for this taxon.
Properties relevant to use:
The wood’s density and strength support structural and wear-critical uses. Interlocked grain and pore structure contribute to a consistent finishing quality, while natural resistance to fungal and insect attack extends service life, enabling floors and exterior joinery. Silica content may dull cutting edges, affecting tool wear during machining.
Standards and regulation:
Timber is traded internationally; permits and compliance may be required under CITES for listed populations and under national timber trade regulations (e.g., EU Timber Regulation, U.S. Lacey Act). For interior uses, compliance with relevant national building-product and finish-emission standards applies.
Sustainability and sourcing:
The species is subject to strong commercial pressure. Certification under schemes such as FSC and verification under timber legality frameworks (e.g., FLEGT/EUTR) are recommended to ensure traceability and mitigate conservation risk in supply chains.
