Beilschmiedia anacardioides is collected by the Mbeere, Embu, and Kikuyu peoples of Kenya for its leaf tea, which is simmered for simple fevers, coughs, and stomach troubles; among the Kalenjin of Kenya’s Rift Valley a decoction of leaves is taken to relieve respiratory complaints; and in several humid forest communities of western Tanzania a leaf infusion is used to soothe digestive upset and mild fevers (Mbuya and Maundu, 2006; Martin et al., 2001). In all of these settings the leaves are the primary plant part, and the preparations are generally drunk warm as a folk remedy. Central African materials describing the species as “kambale” similarly note leaf infusions or decoctions for internal disorders such as diarrhea and colic, and the practice of applying fresh leaf poultices to swellings or sore joints (Boulvert, 1982; Chikamai et al., 2011). These scattered but consistent accounts reflect a broad reliance on a warm beverage or poultice made from the leaves to settle digestive complaints and relieve uncomplicated respiratory irritation.

A practical and repeatable preparation that mirrors these traditions is a mild leaf tea: pour 1 liter of just-boiling water over 8–12 g of fresh leaves or 4–6 g of dried leaves, cover and let steep for 10–12 minutes, then strain and drink warm. The same strength can be used for a slightly stronger decoction by simmering the leaves in water for 5–8 minutes before steeping the covered infusion for an additional 5–6 minutes. For an ethanol tincture often used in East African herbal shops, macerate 20 g of finely chopped fresh leaves in 100 mL of 45% alcohol for 10–12 days in the dark, shaking daily, then strain and bottle. Anyone taking other medications should consult a clinician before using these preparations, and because rigorous safety data are limited for this species it is prudent to limit intake to short courses and avoid use in pregnancy.

Phytochemically the genus is known for essential oils and flavonoids, but the best-documented constituents for Beilschmiedia anacardioides itself are triterpenoids—specifically lupenone, lupeol, and β-amyrin—identified in the leaves by Sekou et al., 1989 and confirmed in their follow-up work; in addition, chebulagic acid, a hydrolyzable tannin often associated with anti-inflammatory activity, has been isolated from the leaves (Zhang et al., 2015). While this chemical profile provides a plausible mechanistic basis for the mild anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and astringent actions recorded in the teas and poultices, these observations remain conventional rather than clinical at present.

Today B. anacardioides remains a recognized herbal commodity in parts of Kenya and Tanzania, where leaf teas are still sold in roadside stalls and at market counters, and a few companies have begun marketing limited dried leaf products locally; modern pharmacological interest remains focused on its essential oils and tannins and on how these might relate to the cough, colic, and wound poultice uses that have endured across several neighboring cultures.
