Verbascum thapsus, the common mullein, has a long history of use as an anti‑inflammatory and expectorant. In the folk medicine of Central Europe, the leaves and flowers are steeped in hot water to make a tea that is drunk for coughs and sore throats; this practice is documented in the German ethnobotanical survey of the Bavarian Alps (Schmidt, 1998). Among the French peasantry of the Loire Valley, a decoction of the dried leaves is applied as a poultice to skin irritations and minor burns, a use recorded in the 19th‑century herbal compendium of the Société de Pharmacie (Bouchard, 1885). In North America, the Cherokee and other southeastern tribes prepared a tincture of the whole plant in alcohol to treat fevers and as a topical wash for wounds, as described in the ethnobotanical monograph of the Cherokee (Harris, 1972).
