Scrophularia nodosa, also known as figwort, woodland figwort, and common figwort, is a perennial herbaceous plant found in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere, except for western North America. It can be found growing in moist and cultivated waste ground. This plant grows upright with thick, square stems and opposite leaves with toothed margins. Its flowers are arranged in loose clusters and have five green sepals and green or purple petals. The plant's seed capsule is egg-shaped. Fossil records show that Scrophularia nodosa has been around since the Middle Pleistocene. In folklore, it was believed that the plant could cure the throat disease scrofula due to the throat-like shape of its flowers.
