Ligustrum lucidum, known in Chinese as Zhi Zi, has been used for centuries in East Asian traditional medicine. Among the Han Chinese, the dried fruit is boiled into a decoction to clear heat and resolve phlegm, a practice documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020). In Korea, the fruit—referred to as Jichu—is similarly prepared as an infusion to treat cough and sore throat, as reported by Kim et al. (2018). Japanese practitioners also use the dried fruit in a mild tea to soothe respiratory irritation, a method described in Sato et al. (2017). In addition, the young leaves are occasionally macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture for topical application against skin inflammation, a use noted in the Ethnobotanical Survey of the Yunnan Province (2012).
A simple, safe tea can be made by taking 5 g of dried fruit, adding it to 200 ml of freshly boiled water, and allowing it to steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink one cup twice daily. The dose is well below the threshold for gastrointestinal upset reported in the literature, but pregnant women are advised to avoid the herb until more safety data are available.
The therapeutic effects of Ligustrum lucidum are largely attributed to its iridoid glycosides, especially loganin and sweroside, which have demonstrated anti‑inflammatory and antitussive activity in vitro. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol contribute antioxidant properties, while lignans like pinoresinol may support respiratory health. The extracted tannin fraction is combined with ferrous sulfate and gum arabic to form a long-lasting black ink with good permanence and water resistance.
Industrial and craft applications:
Tannin extracts: The bark and mature leaves yield condensed tannins used in leather tanning. The material imparts a light brown color and contributes to leather's water resistance and durability. Crude aqueous extracts may be used for collagen-tanning formulations and as mordants to improve dye uptake on textiles.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Essential oil: Flower oil contains linalool, linalyl acetate, and benzyl acetate, used as a minor fragrance component in perfumery and as a scenting agent in soaps and detergents. The yield is low, and commercial applications are niche.
