Agastache rugosa, known in Chinese as “Hu Qu” and in Korean as “Sang-yeong,” has a long history of use as a digestive and respiratory tonic. In traditional Chinese medicine the dried aerial parts are brewed as a tea to relieve stomach pain, abdominal distension, and cough, a practice documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015). Among the Korean people, Kim et al. (2019) report that a decoction of the leaves is taken after meals to ease indigestion and to calm the stomach, while the Japanese folk medicine literature (Sato et al., 2020) describes a mild infusion of the herb for sore throats and mild fever. In all three cultures the same plant part—dried leaves or whole aerial parts—is used, typically steeped in hot water or boiled for a short period to extract the volatile oils and flavonoids that give the herb its characteristic aroma and therapeutic effect.
A simple, safe recipe for a stomach‑soothing tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Agastache rugosa leaves, add 200 ml of freshly boiled water, and steep for 5–10 minutes. Strain and drink 2–3 cups per day, preferably after meals. Because the herb contains estragole and other compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions, it is advisable for pregnant women to avoid this tea or to consult a healthcare professional before use. The tea is generally well tolerated, but individuals with a history of liver disease should limit intake to no more than 3 cups daily.
The therapeutic properties of Agastache rugosa are largely attributed to its essential oil constituents. Linalool, estragole (methyl chavicol), eugenol, and camphor are the most abundant compounds identified in the leaves, and these have been shown in vitro to possess anti‑inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial activities that align with the herb’s traditional uses for digestive discomfort and cough. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol also contribute antioxidant effects, supporting the plant’s role in soothing irritated mucous membranes.
Today Agastache rugosa is cultivated both as an ornamental plant and as a culinary herb in Asian markets. Its essential oil is extracted for use in aromatherapy and as a natural preservative, and research into its anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial properties continues to validate the centuries‑old practices of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese healers.

Leaves are used as an edible herb and seasoning in Korean cuisine (Kim et al., 2021; Perry, 1980). They are processed as a vegetable (National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, 2014). Flavor profile is described as mint–licorice; leaves are eaten raw or cooked (Plants For A Future, 2012). The plant is listed as edible by the University of Illinois Extension (2021).
Properties relevant to use:
Essential oil from aerial parts is characterized by a high proportion of phenylpropanoids—primarily methyl chavicol (estragole) and estragole—typical of the Agastache rugosa chemotype (Kim et al., 2018; Zhou et al., 2016). Anethole has also been reported as a minor to moderate component (Zhou et al., 2016; Rath et al., 2022). These constituents determine a sweet–anise/licorice aroma suitable for flavor applications, while methyl chavicol/estragole content entails flavoring regulations (EFSA, 2014).
