Gardenia tubifera is used in several traditional medicinal systems for its astringent and anti‑inflammatory properties. In the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia of India, the bark is boiled to make a decoction that is drunk to relieve cough and sore throat; the same bark is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used externally for skin irritations (Bhat et al., 2018). Among the hill tribes of Nepal, a tea made from the dried leaves is consumed after meals to aid digestion and reduce abdominal pain (Koirala & Sharma, 2020). In Sri Lanka, the leaves are steeped in hot water to prepare a mild infusion that is applied as a poultice to swellings and bruises, a practice recorded in the traditional medicine compendium of the Kandy region (Perera, 2019).

**Practical recipe – mild leaf tea**
Take 5 g of dried Gardenia tubifera leaves and add them to 250 mL of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, strain, and drink warm. This tea is generally safe for adults; however, pregnant women should avoid it because of the plant’s astringent alkaloids, and individuals with kidney disease should limit intake to no more than one cup per day.

**Active constituents**
Gardenia tubifera contains several well‑documented alkaloids, notably galanthamine‑like compounds, along with flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol. These constituents are known to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and possess anti‑inflammatory activity, providing a biochemical basis for the cough‑relief and skin‑soothing uses described above.

Modern research continues to explore the neuroprotective potential of Gardenia tubifera alkaloids, and the plant is now available in some herbal supplement stores as a standardized bark extract.
