Chinese tanbark-oak (Castanopsis sclerophylla, syn. Lithocarpus chinensis) is an evergreen tree native to southern China. Growing in broad-leaved evergreen forests at 200 to 1,000 m above sea level, it can reach up to 20 m in height and has glossy, thick leaves and attractive flaky bark. The small nuts are edible and are processed into a foodstuff similar to tofu. It is also used as a street tree in Chinese cities and is hardy to USDA zone 7b, doing well in the southeastern United States.
