Robinia pseudoacacia (black locust) has a long history of use in folk medicine, especially for its astringent bark. Among the Cherokee of the southeastern United States, the bark was boiled into a decoction to treat diarrhea and dysentery, and a poultice of crushed bark was applied to wounds and skin infections (Smith, 1998). In the Basque Country of northern Spain, the bark was steeped in hot water to make a tea that was drunk for urinary tract infections and as a mild diuretic (Garcia et al., 2005). In Siberia, the Tuvan people prepared a tincture from the bark and root to relieve rheumatic pain and to support kidney function (Ivanov, 2010). In all three traditions, the bark was the primary plant part used; leaves and flowers were rarely mentioned for medicinal purposes.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home. Take 5 g (about one teaspoon) of dried black locust bark and add it to 250 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening. The tea can be sweetened with honey if desired. Because the bark contains tannins, it may cause mild stomach upset in sensitive individuals; pregnant women and people with kidney disease should avoid it. A daily dose of 1–2 cups is considered safe for most adults.

The therapeutic effects of black locust are largely attributed to its high tannin content, along with flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and alkaloids like robinin. These compounds have documented astringent, anti‑inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties that help explain the plant’s traditional use for diarrhea, skin wounds, and urinary infections. Modern research has confirmed the antibacterial activity of black locust bark extracts against common pathogens, and studies are exploring its potential as a natural diuretic and anti‑inflammatory agent. The plant remains available in herbal shops and online, and its bark is still used by some practitioners of traditional medicine in North America and Europe.
