Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 recorded occasional infusions of Embelia ribes leaves for colds and “general feverishness,” while coastal communities in the Eastern Himalaya prepared decoctions of the fruit for coughs and body pains (Malla and Ghimire, 2020). In Central Himalaya communities, Singh et al., 2021 noted infusions of the leaves to sooth upper respiratory discomfort and decoctions of the berries as an overall “antifebrile” taken in small doses. The Pahari peoples of western Nepal and neighboring Uttarakhand used leaf poultices for minor wounds and swelling (Ghildiyal and Joshi, 2023), and in the Bhutanese highlands, Paine et al., 2018 observed infusions of the leaves given to children for upset stomach and mild fevers.
An efficient preparation for a mild leaf infusion is straightforward: place 1–2 teaspoons of dried, roughly chopped Embelia ribes leaves into 250 mL of just‑boiled water, cover, and steep for 10–12 minutes; strain, and sip 1 cup, 1–2 times daily. A decoction can be made with 1–2 teaspoons of dried berries covered with 250 mL of cold water, brought to a boil, simmered for 15 minutes, then cooled to a drinkable temperature and strained. Because berries contain embelin and related anthraquinones, use modestly and avoid large or repeated doses; the preparations are traditionally employed in limited, short courses for fever, cough, or digestive upset and are not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing individuals, or people with known hypersensitivity to anthraquinones. Do not exceed the amounts and frequency noted in the cited ethnomedical records.
The well‑established constituents that plausibly underlie the documented activities include the quinone embelin, along with minor anthraquinones such as emodin, and phenolic compounds such as quercetin and kaempferol, all reported for Embelia ribes by Ghildiyal and Joshi, 2023. Other contributors include alkaloids and saponins. Embelin has documented antifungal, antibacterial, and antifeedant properties that may explain antipyretic and cough‑relieving uses; emodin contributes antibacterial and antiinflammatory actions that may support the wound‑healing poultice. Modern studies confirm the presence of these compounds and relate them to the plant’s antibacterial and antipyretic effects, while local herbal markets continue to sell dried leaves and fruits and rural households still prepare teas and decoctions for the same seasonal ailments recorded by Malla and Ghimire, 2020.

The mature fruits are used to obtain a brown dyestuff in Southeast Asia; dried powdered fruit furnishes water-soluble browns on cotton and silk and may function as a mordant-assisted dye. Only the fruit is substantiated for this application; other parts lack documented non-medicinal use. No specific chemical class (e.g., anthraquinones) is consistently reported for the dyestuff from this species in the accessible sources, so the product is referenced descriptively as a brown textile colorant rather than by constituent chemistry.
