Sarcandra glabra, known in Chinese medicine as “Sangjiao,” has a long history of use as an herbal remedy for respiratory ailments. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020), a decoction of the dried root is taken to relieve cough and sore throat, and the same preparation is used as a mild diuretic. In Korea, Kim et al. (2015) report that a tea made from the root is traditionally brewed to soothe a sore throat and to reduce inflammation in the upper respiratory tract. Vietnamese practitioners, as documented by Nguyen et al. (2018), prepare a decoction of the root to treat chronic cough and to promote urinary flow, especially in elderly patients.
