Polygonum aviculare, also known as common knotgrass, is an annual plant that is related to buckwheat and dock. It is also referred to as prostrate knotweed, birdweed, pigweed, and lowgrass. This plant can be found in fields and wasteland, and produces white flowers from June to October. It is native to Eurasia but has been naturalized in temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Common knotgrass has a semi-erect stem and hairless leaves with short stalks. Its flowers are green with white or pink margins and its fruit is a dark brown, three-edged nut. This plant is a common carrier of the parasitic pathogen powdery mildew. There are several different sub-species of Polygonum aviculare, and it is widespread and common in Great Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia. It is commonly found on roadsides and arable ground in the British Isles. This plant contains flavonols, flavanoids, and lignans, and has been found in Middle Miocene fossil deposits. It has also been used in traditional cuisine, particularly in Germanic porridge and Vietnamese soups and hot pots.
