Stevia rebaudiana, also known as candyleaf, sweetleaf, or sugarleaf, is a small plant in the Asteraceae family. It grows to a height of 30-60 centimeters and has elongated leaves that are used to make sweetener products. The sweetness comes from steviol glycosides, which are 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia is native to Brazil and Paraguay and is grown commercially in Japan, Southeast Asia, and the US. It prefers warm, moist, and sunny conditions and cannot survive frost. Stevia has been used for centuries by the Guaraní people of Brazil and Paraguay as a sweetener and medicine. It was first described by botanist Moisés Santiago Bertoni in 1899. Stevia is commonly used as a sugar substitute in many developed countries and has been deemed safe for human consumption by various organizations. However, the import of stevia leaf and raw extracts is not allowed for use as sweeteners in the US.
