Across the eastern Himalayas and parts of southwestern China, Dendrobium fimbriatum has been used in several preparation forms. In the Nepali hill villages of the Solukhumbu region, the dried stems are simmered in water to make a mild decoction taken for fever and stomach complaints (Kumar et al., 2017). The same species is employed by the Tamang people of central Nepal; fresh stems are macerated in cold water for several hours, then the liquid is drunk as a tonic after long treks (Singh & Das, 2019). In Yunnan, traditional Chinese practitioners collect the aerial stems, dry them, and later steep them as a tea to clear heat and soothe coughs (Zhongyao Da Cidian, 2021). In the Lepcha communities of Sikkim, a poultice of crushed fresh stems is applied to minor cuts to aid healing (Singh & Das, 2019).
A simple stem decoction can be prepared by taking 10 g of dried, cut stems, adding them to 500 ml of water, bringing the mixture to a boil, and simmering for 15 minutes. The liquid is then strained and drunk warm, up to two cups per day. Because Dendrobium fimbriatum contains alkaloids and polysaccharides, it is advisable not to exceed three cups in a day and to avoid it in pregnancy unless directed by a qualified practitioner.
Phytochemical studies of Dendrobium fimbriatum have identified several well‑documented constituents. The stems are rich in water‑soluble polysaccharides, especially β‑D‑glucans, which are linked to its traditional immunomodulatory use. Alkaloids of the dendrobine class have been isolated from the aerial parts and are known for their modest anti‑inflammatory activity. In addition, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol are present, contributing antioxidant capacity. These compounds provide a plausible biochemical basis for the observed fever‑reducing and wound‑healing actions.
Modern research is beginning to validate these historic uses, with laboratory assays showing anti‑inflammatory and hypoglycemic effects of the stem extracts. Dried stems are still sold in herbal markets across Nepal, Sikkim, and Yunnan, and the plant is cultivated on a small scale for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Continued phytochemical investigation suggests that Dendrobium fimbriatum could become a source of natural products for nutraceutical development.
