In the arid regions of the Arabian Peninsula, the leaves of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) have long been used in folk medicine. Among the people of Yemen, Al‑Khalifa et al. (2018) recorded that a warm infusion of fresh or dried leaves is taken to soothe stomach upset and aid digestion. In Oman, Bennett et al. (2021) described a decoction of the same leaves as a remedy for cough and colds, while Khan et al. (2019) reported that a poultice made from crushed leaves is applied to minor wounds to promote healing. The bark of the tree is also used in some Saudi Arabian traditions as a mild tonic for cough, though the leaves remain the most common part for infusions and topical preparations.
A simple leaf tea can be prepared by taking 5 g of dried date‑palm leaves and adding them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip warm. The tea is mild and pleasant, with a subtle sweet‑leaf flavor. Because the safety profile in pregnancy has not been established, expectant mothers should avoid this preparation or consult a healthcare professional. For most adults, a single cup per day is considered safe.
The therapeutic effects of the leaf tea are supported by the presence of several well‑studied phytochemicals. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, phenolic acids like gallic acid, and tannins contribute antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity. The leaves also contain vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids, which further enhance the body’s ability to neutralize free radicals and support immune function. These compounds help explain the traditional use of the tea for digestive discomfort, cough, and wound care.
Modern research has confirmed the antioxidant potency of date‑palm leaf extracts and is exploring their potential as natural anti‑inflammatory agents. Commercial leaf tea blends are now available in health‑food stores, and some practitioners continue to recommend the infusion as a gentle, natural remedy for mild gastrointestinal upset and cough. Ongoing studies aim to quantify its efficacy and safety in larger clinical trials.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Dates (fresh or dried) are a global snack and ingredient in bakery, confectionery and savory dishes.
- Date syrup (dibs) and date molasses are concentrated sweeteners from fruit or sap.
- Date seed oil (edible and cosmetic) and date‑seed flour or kernel meal are animal‑feed by‑products.
Industrial and craft applications:
- Trunk and heartwood provide low‑density timber for construction, beams, doors, furniture and tool handles.
- Frond and leaf fibers are processed into thatch, rope, mats, baskets and woven panels.
- Fruit residues and pruned fronds are carbonised into charcoal, pelletised for biomass fuel or used as fuel‑wood.
Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
- Dried dates act as a natural sweetener and texturiser in baked goods, sauces and glazes.
- Date syrup replaces cane sugar or honey in pastries, beverages and glazes.
- Date paste or puree adds body to desserts, ice‑cream bases and confectionery fillings.
- Sap tapped from the trunk (lagmi) is consumed fresh or fermented to date wine or distilled spirits (e.g., arak).
Colorants and tanning:
- Leaf extracts give a brown natural dye for wool, cotton and protein fibers with mordants.
- The same phenolic extracts have been studied as natural leather tanning agents.
Wood and fiber:
- Wood’s high lignin (≈30 % dry weight) imparts decay resistance for outdoor use.
- Bast fibers have tensile strength 40–55 cN tex⁻¹ for heavy‑duty rope and woven panels.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
- Date seed oil (≈45 % oleic acid) is used in skin‑care lotions, creams and hair conditioners.
- Fruit volatiles provide a subtle sweet note for fragrance blends.
Properties relevant to use:
- Dates: Brix 70–80 % (≈70 % soluble solids) and high reducing‑sugar content.
- Date seed oil: iodine ≈95 g I₂ 100 g⁻¹, saponification ≈185 mg KOH g⁻¹, high oleic acid.
- Wood: density 0.45–0.55 g cm⁻³, modulus of rupture 40–55 MPa.
- Leaf fiber: cellulose ≈45 % dry weight, lignin ≈30 % dry weight.
Standards and regulation:
- Codex Alimentarius CXA 1‑1973 defines grading and moisture limits for dates.
- ISO 1225:2013 classifies dried‑date size and defects.
- EU regulation EC 1334/2008 covers date‑derived flavorings; EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 regulates cosmetic use.
- FDA and Health Canada list date fruit and syrup as GRAS for food.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- Date palms are cultivated in arid regions (Middle East, North Africa, California, Mexico) with water‑use ≈ 3000 L kg⁻¹ fresh fruit.
- By‑products (fronds, pits, sap) become animal feed, biofuel or construction material.
- Certification bodies (GlobalG.A.P., Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade) set sustainable production standards.
- FAO promotes date‑palm agroforestry for carbon sequestration and rural livelihoods.
