Angelica japonica, a perennial herb of the Apiaceae family, has a long history of use in East Asian folk medicine. In Japan, the dried root is traditionally boiled to produce a decoction that is drunk to relieve stomach pain and menstrual cramps; Yamada et al., 2016 report that the root is also macerated in alcohol to make a tincture for digestive disorders. Korean practitioners use the same root as a poultice for bruises and as a decoction for colds and coughs, a practice documented by Kim et al., 2018. In Chinese herbal circles, the fresh leaves are steeped in hot water to make a light tea that is taken to ease sore throats and to promote circulation, as described by Li et al., 2017. These three cultures—Japanese, Korean, and Chinese—highlight the plant’s versatility in infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and topical poultices.

A simple, safe tea can be prepared at home. Take 5 g of dried root, place it in a pot, and add 200 ml of boiling water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink two cups per day. The tea is mild and can be taken with meals. Pregnant women should avoid the decoction, and individuals with liver disease should use it sparingly, as the coumarin content can be hepatotoxic in high doses.

The therapeutic effects of Angelica japonica are largely attributed to its well‑studied phytochemicals. The root contains coumarins such as imperatorin and isoimperatorin, which have documented anti‑inflammatory and antispasmodic activity. Furanocoumarins, including bergapten, are also present and contribute to the plant’s digestive benefits. Volatile oils—mainly angeloyl and related compounds—give the herb its characteristic aroma and are thought to aid in circulation and pain relief.

Modern research continues to explore these constituents. Recent pharmacological studies have confirmed the anti‑inflammatory properties of imperatorin, and the plant is now available as a dietary supplement in Japan, where it is marketed for digestive health. The ongoing traditional use, coupled with scientific validation, keeps Angelica japonica relevant both in herbal practice and in contemporary wellness markets.
