It is a small to medium size tree, native to the United States, and found in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, California, and Texas. It is an aromatic species, with essential oil that can be extracted from the trunk, limbs, needles, and seed cones. The seeds are dispersed by the pinyon jay, which plucks them out of the open cones, and are also eaten by wild turkey, Montezuma quail, and various mammals. The edible seeds, pine nuts, are extensively collected throughout its range, and are used for food, as well as for making ornamental trees and Christmas trees. The species is of immense cultural and economic importance to Native American tribes.
