Aegle marmelos, commonly called bael, has a long history of use in South Asian folk medicine. In Ayurvedic practice, the fruit pulp is steeped in hot water to produce a mild tea that is taken for cough, sore throat, and mild fever; the leaves are similarly decocted for digestive complaints and for treating skin eruptions (Sharma et al., 2015). In Bangladesh, the bark is macerated in alcohol to make a tincture that is applied topically as a poultice for wounds and ulcers, while the fruit is boiled into a decoction to relieve dysentery and diarrhea (Khan et al., 2018). Nepalese healers also prepare a leaf infusion to soothe menstrual cramps and to reduce inflammation in arthritis (Bhandari et al., 2019). These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices, and they illustrate the plant’s versatility across three distinct cultural traditions.

A simple, safe tea can be made from fresh bael fruit. Take 1 cup (≈ 250 mL) of boiling water and add the pulp of one medium fruit, or 1 tablespoon of finely chopped leaves. Let the mixture steep for 5–7 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily. The tea is generally well tolerated, but pregnant women should avoid large quantities of the fruit pulp because of its mild emmenagogue activity. If you have a history of kidney stones, consult a healthcare provider before using bael regularly, as the fruit contains oxalates.

The therapeutic effects of bael are linked to several well‑documented phytochemicals. The fruit pulp is rich in flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which have antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties. The bark contains alkaloids like bael alkaloid and coumarins such as esculetin, which contribute to its antimicrobial and antidiarrheal actions. Phenolic acids, including gallic acid, are also present and help to soothe irritated mucous membranes. These constituents provide a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional uses in treating respiratory, digestive, and skin ailments.

Modern research continues to validate bael’s medicinal potential. Recent studies in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology have confirmed its antibacterial activity against common gastrointestinal pathogens, and commercial herbal vendors now offer bael fruit tea, dried leaf powders, and standardized bark extracts. The plant remains an integral part of contemporary Ayurvedic formulations and is still widely used by rural communities in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal for everyday health maintenance.

Common products:
Fruit pulp is processed into beverages, syrups, and confectionery products; it is also used as a flavoring agent in non-medicinal formulations and as a natural acidulant. Established products include “bael” fruit beverages and preserves. The fruit rind yields pectin used as a gelling agent in jams and jellies.

Industrial and craft applications:
Wood is used locally for agricultural implements, tool handles, and furniture. The tree yields a gum/resin that functions as a non-medicinal adhesive and coating binder; it is compatible with natural dyes and acts as a fixative in craft applications. Natural-dye processes employ the fruit pulp or rind as a brown dye for protein fibers such as wool and silk.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Pulp is processed into drinks and syrups; candied pulp and fruit leather are produced. The rind’s pectin is used as a food gelling agent; total soluble solids and acidity make it suitable for syrup and beverage bases. Bael essential oil is used by the flavor and fragrance industry for citrus-like aromatic notes.

Colorants and tanning:
Fruit pulp/rind provide brown natural dyes for textiles, notably protein fibers. Leather tanning with the fruit is reported historically; tannins in the pulp contribute to the dye/tanning effect and fix colors.

Wood and fiber:
Wood is used in rural construction and tool-making; specific gravity and durability are suitable for such applications. No bast-fiber or commercial fiber use is documented.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Bael leaf and fruit essential oils are used in perfumery and as fragrance components in non-medicinal cosmetic bases.

Properties relevant to use:
Acidity and pectin content in the pulp enable beverage and confectionery processing; the essential oil’s composition yields citrus-aromatic notes. Tannins in the pulp contribute to dyeing and tanning; the gum provides adhesive/coating functionality.

Scientific/model-organism use:
The species is used in agronomic and genetic studies; it is represented in national germplasm repositories and referenced in databases (e.g., GBIF) to support taxonomy and conservation resources. No standardized model-organism protocols are established.

Standards and regulation:
Food-grade pectin production follows national and international food additive standards (e.g., purity criteria and heavy-metal limits). Flavor/fragrance uses are subject to relevant safety and quality standards (e.g., FEMA/GRAS status for flavoring materials, ISO/ASTM methods for fragrance evaluation).

Sustainability and sourcing:
As a hardy tree adapted to semi-arid and tropical conditions, it is cultivated in India and neighboring regions; wild harvesting remains significant in some areas. Sustainable practices include on-farm processing of pulp/gum to reduce waste and support rural livelihoods.
