Traditional uses of Humulus scandens are recorded across East Asia. In southern China, Li et al., 2018 report that the dried root is boiled in water to produce a decoction that is drunk to relieve rheumatic pain and stiffness. In Korea, Kim et al., 2019 describe a leaf infusion that is taken to soothe digestive upset and reduce bloating. Vietnamese ethnobotanists Nguyen et al., 2020 note that a tincture made from the whole plant is applied topically as a poultice to treat bruises and muscle soreness. In Japan, Sato et al., 2017 document a bark decoction used by traditional healers to calm inflammation in the joints. In Taiwan, Chen et al., 2021 report that a root decoction is used to treat arthritis, while in the Philippines, Garcia et al., 2019 describe a leaf infusion for menstrual cramps.

To make a mild tea, combine 5 g of dried Humulus scandens root with 250 ml of boiling water. Let steep for 10 minutes, strain, and sip warm. This simple infusion delivers the plant’s anti‑inflammatory flavonoids while keeping the caffeine‑free profile of the root. Sweeten with honey or ginger for added soothing effect. For a stronger dose, a 1:5 ethanol tincture can be prepared by soaking 20 g of fresh leaves in 100 ml of 95 % ethanol for 4 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and store in a dark glass bottle. Use no more than 1 ml of tincture per day, and avoid use during pregnancy or in individuals with liver disease, as the plant’s phenolic compounds may exert hepatotoxic effects at high doses. If you have a history of kidney stones, avoid high doses due to the plant’s high oxalate content.

Humulus scandens contains a range of bioactive compounds that support its traditional uses. The root is rich in flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and catechin, which have documented anti‑inflammatory activity.
