Cyperus rotundus, commonly called nut‑grass, has a long history of use as an herbal infusion and decoction in several traditional medical systems. In the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia of India, the dried rhizomes are boiled to make a mild tea that is taken for stomach upset and mild fever; this practice is documented in the Indian Pharmacopoeia, 2015 and in Bennett et al., 2021. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a decoction of the fresh roots is prescribed for abdominal pain and dysentery; Li and Wang, 2019 report that the roots are simmered for 30 minutes and the liquid is drunk in small doses. Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, a maceration of the leaves in alcohol is used as a poultice for skin infections and as a topical tincture for wound healing; Okoro et al., 2020 describe the preparation of a 1:5 ethanol extract that is applied to the affected area.
