  • Do not use plants for self-treatment. Safety, efficacy, and appropriate use are not established here.

Among many East and Southeast Asian communities, the roots and bark of Wikstroemia indica are most often used in decoctions. In southern China, healers brew a weak decoction from dried roots to relieve pain and swelling, and they apply a cooled decoction externally on bruises and painful joints; records of these preparations appear in modern pharmacognosy surveys that track traditional formulations in South China (Perry, 1980; Furuya et al., 1987). In Thailand, folk healers of the northern region prepare a bark decoction taken in small amounts as an anthelmintic and carminative, a practice recorded in ethnomedical compendia of Thai medicinal plants (Perry, 1980). In Vietnam, traditional practitioners simmer leaves and sometimes the bark, then use the warm liquid as a compress for mastitis and skin inflammation (Nguyen, 1999). One recipe commonly cited is a mild decoction for external use: simmer 10–15 g of dried, chopped root or bark in 500 ml of water for 15–20 minutes, cool, and apply with clean gauze; the same decoction may be taken in small, physician‑guided doses for digestive upset, but never as a substitute for professional care. Because the plant contains esters such as daphnoretin that irritate the gut and can be toxic in excess, limit ingestion to one small cup per day if advised by a trained practitioner, and do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The plant’s known constituents include daphnoretin and related flavonoids, triterpenes such as betulinic acid, and simple phenolic acids, which together suggest irritant and anti‑inflammatory actions consistent with its traditional use as an external wash (Furuya et al., 1987). At present, dried material continues to be available in regional markets in southern China and northern Thailand, and academic studies continue to explore its pharmacology, while clinicians caution that self‑treatment is unwise.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Ornamental horticulture: W. indica is cultivated for landscaping and erosion control in warm regions and difficult sites, valued for its suckering habit and early-season flowering.

Industrial and craft applications:
Bast fiber for crafts: Stems are processed by soaking and scraping to extract bast fibers for cordage, rope, coarse weaving, and basket weaving. The fiber’s practical suitability derives from relatively long, coherent bast bundles obtained by retting and mechanical processing, as is common in Thymelaeaceae bast fibers. The plant’s suckering growth supports sustained harvests without felling mature trees, reducing pressure on natural stands.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No documented food or beverage uses are reported for W. indica.

Colorants and tanning:
No documented dye or tannin uses are reported for W. indica.

Wood and fiber:
Wood utility is limited; the plant’s main fiber value lies in its stem bast.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No documented fragrance or cosmetic uses are reported for W. indica.

Properties relevant to use:
Fiber suitability for cordage and coarse textiles hinges on bast fiber strength and cohesion after retting; mechanical separation produces bundles suitable for twisting into yarns or cords.

Standards and regulation:
No dedicated commercial standards are cited for this species.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Propagation by suckers and harvest of stems rather than whole plants favor resource-efficient production. For ornamental cultivation, local invasive-species guidelines and horticultural best practices apply; in natural areas, harvesting should respect site-level ecological considerations.
