Wikstroemia indica, also known as tie bush, is a small shrub found in central and southeastern China, Vietnam, India, Australia, and the Philippines. It has glossy leaves, small greenish-yellow flowers, and toxic red fruits. The plant is toxic and can cause symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, and abdominal pain. However, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an antipyretic, detoxicant, expectorant, vermifuge, and abortifacient. Chemicals found in the plant include daphnoretin, chrysophanol, myricitrime, and rutin, and the plant extract has shown antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies.
