Daphne oleoides is a small, evergreen shrub belonging to the Thymelaeaceae family. It is native to southern Europe, northern Africa, and Asia Minor, and can grow up to 60 cm tall with upright branches. The flowers of this shrub are white with a purplish outside and it produces orange fruits. It is commonly found on calcareous rocks and rocky slopes at altitudes between 1700 to 2300 m. There are several subtaxa of Daphne oleoides, including subsp. baksanica, subsp. kurdica, subsp. transcaucasica, and var. brachyloba, buxifolia, and glandulosa.

Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper. |
Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve. |
