Triadica sebifera, the Chinese tallow tree, has a long history of use in East Asian folk medicine. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015) the dried bark is boiled as a decoction to relieve coughs and sore throats, while the leaves are steeped in hot water to soothe skin irritations and to treat minor wounds. Vietnamese practitioners, as reported by Nguyen et al. (2018), prepare a similar bark decoction for respiratory complaints and use a poultice of crushed bark on inflamed joints. Korean herbalists, according to Kim et al. (2019), apply a macerated bark paste to cuts and abrasions to promote healing and reduce infection. These three traditions—Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean—demonstrate a consistent reliance on infusions and poultices of bark and leaves for respiratory and dermatological ailments.

A simple, safe preparation is a bark decoction. Take 5 g of dried bark and add it to 250 ml of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, then strain and allow the liquid to cool to a drinkable temperature. Consume 200 ml twice daily, not exceeding 10 g of bark per day. Pregnant women should avoid this decoction because saponins can have uterine stimulant effects, and anyone with a history of gastrointestinal upset should start with a smaller dose. The resulting tea is mild, with a slightly bitter, astringent taste that is characteristic of many traditional cough remedies.

The therapeutic effects of Triadica sebifera are largely attributed to its saponins, flavonoids, and triterpenoid compounds. The bark contains sapogenin‑based saponins that exhibit anti‑inflammatory and expectorant activity, while the leaves are rich in flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which help soothe irritated skin and reduce edema. Triterpenoids, including oleanolic acid derivatives, have been isolated from the bark and are thought to contribute to the plant’s antimicrobial properties. These well‑established phytochemicals provide a biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Modern research continues to explore Triadica sebifera’s medicinal potential. Recent phytochemical studies have isolated novel saponins with significant anti‑inflammatory activity, and the tallow oil extracted from the seeds is commercially available as a natural lubricant and in cosmetic formulations. Thus, while the tree remains a staple of traditional East Asian medicine, its bioactive constituents are also attracting scientific interest for pharmaceutical development.
