Artabotrys hexapetalus, commonly called Bengal star anise, is a climbing shrub that has long been used in the folk medicine of the Indian subcontinent. Among Ayurvedic practitioners in southern India, the dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is taken for cough, asthma, and general respiratory irritation (Sharma et al., 2018). In Bangladesh, traditional healers prepare a decoction of the bark and root to treat stomach pain, dysentery, and fever (Islam et al., 2017). The Garo and Khasi peoples of Meghalaya use a maceration of the fruit in palm wine to relieve headaches and as a mild analgesic (Singh & Reddy, 2019).
