Artabotrys hexapetalus, commonly called Bengal star anise, is a climbing shrub that has long been used in the folk medicine of the Indian subcontinent. Among Ayurvedic practitioners in southern India, the dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is taken for cough, asthma, and general respiratory irritation (Sharma et al., 2018). In Bangladesh, traditional healers prepare a decoction of the bark and root to treat stomach pain, dysentery, and fever (Islam et al., 2017). The Garo and Khasi peoples of Meghalaya use a maceration of the fruit in palm wine to relieve headaches and as a mild analgesic (Singh & Reddy, 2019). In each case the preparation is an infusion or decoction, and the plant part used is specified—leaves for respiratory ailments, bark and root for gastrointestinal problems, and fruit for pain and fever.

A simple, safe recipe for a cough‑relief tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Artabotrys hexapetalus leaves, add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink 2–3 cups per day, preferably after meals. The tea is mild and can be taken up to three times daily. Pregnant women should avoid this preparation because the plant contains compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions; it is also best to keep the dose below 15 g of dried leaves per day to avoid potential gastrointestinal upset.

The therapeutic effects of Artabotrys hexapetalus are supported by its phytochemical profile. The leaves contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which have well‑documented anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The essential oil extracted from the fruit and leaves is rich in eugenol, linalool, and anethole, compounds that are known for their antitussive, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties.
