Stachys byzantina, known locally as “lamb’s‑ear,” is recorded as a gentle medicinal tea in three distinct cultural settings. Among the communities of eastern Anatolia in Turkey, dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild infusion used for soothing coughs and easing mild fevers (Koyuncu & Zorlu 2018). The Kurdish peoples of western Iran likewise prepare a leaf decoction that is taken warm to relieve sore‑throat irritation and to aid digestion (Mahdi et al., 2015). In the Tusheti highlands of Georgia, traditional healers brew a leaf infusion that is drunk as a febrifuge and, when cooled, used as a wash for minor wounds (Ramishvili & Gotsiridze, 2020). In each case the plant part employed is the foliage, most commonly harvested when the leaves are young and still soft.
Further local practices extend the preparation methods beyond simple tea. In Armenian folk medicine of the Aragatsotn region, fresh leaf tissue is macerated in water for several hours and then pressed to obtain a poultice applied to inflamed or irritated skin (Varosyan & Sargsyan 2016). A short decoction of the aerial parts—leaves and young stems—is also used in Georgian mountain villages as a rinse for minor cuts and abrasions, believed to help keep the area clean and promote healing.
A practical “mild tea” can be made by combining 2–3 g (roughly one generous teaspoon) of dried Stachys byzantina leaves with 200 ml of just‑boiled water. The mixture is covered and steeped for 5–10 minutes, then strained. The resulting infusion can be drunk 1–2 times daily, preferably after meals. Because the plant contains rosmarinic acid and related phenolics that may act as mild uterine stimulants, the tea should be avoided by pregnant women and by individuals taking anticoagulant medication unless advised by a health professional.
The pharmacological profile of the species supports the traditional uses. Phytochemical analyses consistently report rosmarinic acid and its derivatives, together with caffeic acid, luteolin‑ and apigenin‑type flavonoids, and essential‑oil constituents such as β‑caryophyllene, α‑pinene and linalool (Sadowska et al., 2014; Jafari et al., 2019). These compounds exhibit antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity, which plausibly underlies the relief of cough, fever and skin irritation described in folk practices.
Today Stachys byzantina remains a subject of ongoing scientific study; laboratory work is exploring its antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory potentials for possible use in modern phytotherapy. While commercial herbal teas labeled “lamb’s‑ear” are sold in specialty shops, the plant still appears in garden borders across the Mediterranean and the Caucasus, reflecting a living bridge between traditional knowledge and contemporary horticulture.
