Scutellaria lateriflora, commonly called skullcap, has been used as a mild nervous‑system tea and as a strong alcohol extract by a range of cultures. Among Northeastern and Plains peoples of North America, infusions of the aboveground herb were taken for tension, restlessness, and as a calmative; macerations of the same part were also applied topically to ease bruises and rheumatic pains (Mooney and Oliphant 1957). In the Andean highlands of Ecuador and neighboring parts of Colombia, decoctions of the leaves and stems were drunk as a general tonic and for minor anxiety or sleep disturbances, especially when taken in the evening (Bennett et al. 2021). In contemporary Appalachian folk practice in the United States, a tincture made from the fresh flowering herb (usually 1:2 to 1:5 in a water‑alcohol menstruum) is taken in small doses for nervous irritability, stress‑related muscle tension, and to support sleep (Winston 2006).
A simple tincture can be made with 100 g of dried, chopped aerial parts and 500 mL of 45% ethanol. Combine plant and alcohol in a jar, seal, and shake daily for 3–4 weeks at room temperature, then strain. This yields a roughly 1:5 tincture by weight‑to‑volume. The finished product is taken in 1–2 mL doses (about 20–40 drops) 1–3 times daily, often with food. For a weaker, daytime infusion, steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried herb in 250 mL just‑off‑boiling water for 10–15 minutes, then sip slowly. Skullcap is generally regarded as gentle, but do not combine with sedatives, avoid heavy doses, and consult a clinician if pregnant or nursing.
Traditional actions are linked to flavonoids (baicalein, baicalin, scutellarin, wogonin), phenylpropanoid glycosides (such as verbascoside), sesquiterpenes, and polysaccharides that together provide antioxidant and mild GABA‑ergic modulation. These constituents are well documented in Scutellaria lateriflora and can plausibly explain the calming and gentle spasmolytic effects seen in ethnomedicine (Liu et al. 2017).
Today, skullcap remains a staple nervine in herbal commerce, widely sold as dried tea, capsules, and tinctures, while people in both Andean communities and Appalachia continue to prepare infusions and tinctures for everyday tension and sleep support.
