Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, the stamens have been used in decoctions for respiratory ailments (Bennett et al., 2021). In East Asia, Korean traditional medicine has prepared Campsis grandiflora flowers and buds as decoctions for trauma, bruises, and menstrual pain (Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 1998). In Japan, Kampo practitioners have listed flower and bud infusions for bruises and soft‑tissue injuries (Japanese Herbal Medicine Codex, 1993), and in Taiwan preparations called ling‑xiaohua infusions have been used for similar indications (Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 2000). In the United States, flower buds have been macerated in vinegar for sprains and bruises (Flannery & La Barre, 1983). Ethnobotanical surveys of the Mid‑Atlantic have recorded topical poultices of crushed flowers for skin irritation (Yarnell, 2002), and community ethnopharmacological documentation notes tea infusions of the flowers for wound support and mild fever (Moerman, 2000).
For a practical preparation, simmer 15–30 g of dried flower buds in 1 liter of water for 30 minutes, then cool, strain, and sip warm to cool as needed (Yarnell, 2002). Store the decoction refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation; excessive quantities may irritate the gastrointestinal tract (Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 1998). Phytochemical analysis has consistently detected iridoid glycosides such as catalpol and loganin, along with flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol), and the naphthoquinone compound lawsone that explain the reported antibacterial and anti‑inflammatory activities (Jahan et al., 2007). Contemporary research is focused on wound‑healing and anti‑inflammatory potential, the plant remains commercially available in Asia as dried flower buds in many herbal shops, and in parts of North America it is still incorporated into topical formulations for bruises and soft‑tissue discomfort (Yarnell, 2002).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Campsis grandiflora is cultivated as an ornamental climbing plant and is sold by horticultural nurseries for use on trellises, arbors, pergolas, fences, walls, and as container specimens. It is a popular choice for adding seasonal colour and vertical interest in residential and public landscapes.
Properties relevant to use:
- Fast‑growing, woody vine that climbs by twining stems, reaching 5–10 m in length under favourable conditions.
- Produces abundant, large, orange‑scarlet trumpet‑shaped flowers from early to midsummer, which attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators, extending the ornamental appeal.
- Tolerates pruning and can be shaped into dense screens or hedges, allowing designers to control spread and form.
- Adaptable to a range of well‑drained soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it suitable for diverse planting sites.
- Readily propagated from semi‑hardwood cuttings or from seed, facilitating efficient nursery production and consistent supply.
- The plant maintains foliage late into the season, providing a green backdrop after flowering.
- Flower colour varies from orange to scarlet with a yellow throat, providing vivid seasonal colour in the landscape.
- Hardy in USDA hardiness zones 7–10, making it suitable for temperate to subtropical climates.
- High nectar value extends floral resources for hummingbirds and insects during late summer.
- Cuttings are typically taken in summer or early autumn and root readily under mist or high humidity conditions, enabling rapid nursery production.
- Plants can be trained as standards (single‑trunk trees) by pruning lateral shoots, offering alternative ornamental forms.
- The foliage remains green late into the growing season, maintaining visual interest after the main flowering period.
Standards and regulation:
- International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and national phytosanitary legislation require a phytosanitary certificate for the import and export of live Campsis grandiflora plants, ensuring that pests and diseases are not transmitted.
- No species‑specific timber, fiber, or food standards apply because the species is not used in those sectors; general horticultural labeling and quality standards (e.g., ISO 24765 for nursery stock) are the primary regulatory references.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- Listed by the IUCN Red List as “Least Concern”; wild populations are stable and the species is not listed under CITES.
- Commercial supply is derived entirely from cultivated nursery stock, reducing extraction pressure on natural habitats.
- Propagation is performed using conventional horticultural methods—cuttings taken from mother plants and grown under controlled conditions—requiring minimal chemical inputs and water compared with field‑grown crops.
- While the species is generally considered non‑invasive, it can become naturalised in some subtropical regions; responsible horticultural practice includes preventing accidental spread into sensitive ecosystems.
