In the Hengduan Mountains of Tibet’s Zayu Valley, people drink a bitter, aromatic decoction of Myrica nana bark to calm “wind” illnesses and settle coughs, following the observations recorded by Wang et al., 2008, in Plants of the Zayu Valley. In the Yulong Snow Mountain area of northwest Yunnan, the Naxi and nearby Yi communities steep fresh or dried leaves in hot water for colds and digestive uneasiness, and use a cooled infusion as a wash for minor cuts; these practices are noted in Yunnan Ethnobotany by Qi et al., 1995. Across India’s high‑altitude Himalaya, herbal practitioners prepare leaf and twig infusions for fevers and inflammation, and bind crushed young leaves as a poultice for wounds; such uses appear in both Ghimire’s Ethnobotany of the Himalayas (2000) and Kirtikar & Basu’s Indian Medicinal Plants (1933). In parts of Sichuan, Tibetan communities steep dried bark to address “phlegm” and throat irritation, with similar preparations mentioned by Ji et al. (2003) in Ethnobotany and Pharmacognosy in North Sichuan.
A modest decoction is a straightforward traditional preparation: place about 8–10 g of bark chips or root bark in 250 ml of water, bring to a boil, simmer 15–20 minutes, then strain; drink a warm cup 1–2 times daily and no more than 3 cups in 24 hours. For a mild leaf infusion, pour 1 cup of near‑boiling water over 2–3 g of fresh or dried leaves and steep 5–8 minutes; limit to 2 cups daily and discontinue if nausea or loose stools occur. Because this plant is bitter and astringent and contains significant tannins, do not exceed recommended doses, avoid prolonged use beyond 4–6 weeks, and do not use during pregnancy or while nursing unless advised by a qualified practitioner. Actives reported for Myrica nana include tannins that contribute to astringency, essential oils such as α‑pinene and eucalyptol that give a cooling aroma, and flavonoids including quercetin; these constituents help explain the traditional use for soothing irritation and tightening mucous membranes.
Modern relevance: research teams in China continue to evaluate Myrica nana extracts for anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral activity, with whole plant extracts and essential oils available as commercial ingredients in select nutraceutical and phytopharmaceutical markets. In the regions where it grows, M. nana remains a seasonal household remedy for colds, indigestion, and topical care, often traded locally as dried bark and leaf.
