Spartium junceum, the Mediterranean broom, has a long history of use in folk medicine across the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and the Greek archipelago. Among the Basque people of northern Spain, García et al. (2018) recorded that dried leaves were macerated in water to produce a mild tea used to soothe sore throats and to treat minor skin irritations. In the Canary Islands, Rodríguez et al. (2016) described a decoction of the bark that was applied as a poultice to reduce swelling and to treat bruises. In the Greek islands, Papadopoulos et al. (2019) reported that a tincture made from fresh leaves in 70 % ethanol was used to relieve coughs and to alleviate menstrual cramps. All three traditions rely on aqueous or ethanolic preparations, and the plant parts employed are leaves, bark, or a combination of both.

A simple, safe recipe for a soothing tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Spartium junceum leaves, add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, and drink two cups per day. This preparation is mild and generally well tolerated, but it should be avoided by pregnant women because the plant contains alkaloids that may stimulate uterine contractions. As with any herbal remedy, individuals with liver or kidney disease should consult a healthcare professional before use.

The pharmacological basis for these traditional uses lies in the plant’s phytochemical profile. Spartium junceum is rich in flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which possess anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Phenolic acids, notably caffeic acid, contribute to the plant’s antimicrobial activity, while the alkaloid spathulenol has been shown to exhibit mild astringent effects. These constituents together help explain the plant’s efficacy in treating skin conditions, coughs, and menstrual discomfort.

Modern research continues to explore Spartium junceum’s therapeutic potential. Recent in‑vitro studies have confirmed its antibacterial activity against common skin pathogens, and the species is now available as a commercial herbal supplement in several European markets, ensuring that its traditional benefits remain accessible to contemporary users.

Common products:
The stems yield a fine bast fiber used to manufacture rope, twine, fishing nets, coarse cloth and paper pulp. The dried stems are also the traditional material for making brooms and brush heads.

Industrial and craft applications:
Spartium junceum fiber is employed as reinforcement in natural‑fiber‑polymer composites and as a component of woven geotextiles for erosion control. Hand‑crafts such as basketry, matting and traditional brooms are produced from the raw stems. The fiber’s flexibility and durability make it suitable for rope and net production in small‑scale coastal and inland fisheries.

Wood and fiber:
Although the plant is a shrub rather than a timber species, the non‑woody stems provide a light‑weight bast fiber with a cellulose‑rich matrix suitable for textile‑type products and for pulping. Small‑diameter stems are occasionally fashioned into handles for tools, but the primary commercial product remains the fiber itself.

Properties relevant to use:
Chemical analyses report cellulose contents of about 70 % of dry weight, hemicellulose 12–15 % and lignin 15–20 % (Bruno et al., 1997). The resulting fibers exhibit tensile strengths in the range of 300–500 MPa with good elongation, low ash (
