Ononis spinosa, commonly known as spiny restharrow, has a long history of use in Mediterranean folk medicine. Among the Turkish people, the dried roots are boiled into a decoction to treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones, a practice documented by Yilmaz et al. (2018). In Greece, the leaves and stems are macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is applied topically as a poultice for rheumatic pain and skin wounds; this use is reported by Papadopoulos et al. (2019). Spanish herbalists traditionally prepare a tea from the whole plant to relieve constipation and to act as a mild diuretic, a method described in Garcia et al. (2017). In all three cultures, the plant is valued for its anti‑inflammatory, diuretic, and antimicrobial properties.

A simple and safe way to experience these benefits is to make a mild root tea. Take 5 g of dried Ononis spinosa roots and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and sip slowly. This infusion can be taken up to three times a day, but it should be avoided during pregnancy because of its diuretic effect, and people with kidney disease should consult a healthcare professional before use. The tea is gentle on the stomach and can be sweetened with a small amount of honey if desired.

The therapeutic actions of Ononis spinosa are largely attributed to its well‑established phytochemicals. The plant contains a range of onosaponins, which are triterpenoid saponins known for their anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with phenolic acids like caffeic acid, contribute antioxidant activity. Additionally, the alkaloid ononisine has been isolated from the roots and is thought to play a role in the plant’s diuretic and antispasmodic properties. These constituents have been repeatedly identified in phytochemical studies and provide a plausible chemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Recent laboratory research has confirmed many of these traditional claims. In vitro studies show that Ononis spinosa extracts inhibit the growth of common urinary pathogens and reduce inflammatory cytokine production in cultured cells. Animal models demonstrate significant analgesic and anti‑arthritic effects, supporting its use for rheumatic conditions. Commercially, the plant is available as dried root powder, tincture, and standardized onosaponin extracts, and it continues to be used by herbal practitioners in the Mediterranean region.

The plant is also an important nectar source for honeybees; honey derived from its flowers is sold in some European markets and is recorded in regional beekeeping guides as a “monofloral” honey with a typical amber colour and moderate moisture (≈ 17–19 %). Pollen collected from the flowers is used in beekeeping as a supplementary protein source.

Industrial and craft applications:
No documented non‑medicinal industrial or craft uses for O. spinosa have been identified in reliable sources.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
The principal food‑related product is honey; processing involves standard apiary extraction, filtration and packing under national honey regulations. No other culinary applications are reported.

Colorants and tanning:
No documented use of O. spinosa as a dye or tannin source is found in peer‑reviewed literature.

Wood and fiber:
The species is a small shrub with limited stem size; no commercial timber or fiber uses have been reported.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Although the flowers are fragrant, commercial extraction of essential oil or use in perfumery has not been documented for O. spinosa.

Properties relevant to use:
The leaves contain appreciable levels of nitrogen (≈ 2 % dry weight) due to symbiotic Rhizobium nodules, which supports the fodder’s protein content and contributes to soil nitrogen enrichment when the plant is incorporated into crop‑livestock rotations. The honey’s physical properties (e.g., moisture ≤ 20 %) meet general honey quality standards, and the plant’s pollen production (≈ 30 mg per flower) is considered favorable for bee nutrition.

Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Resents Transplanting: These plants do not tolerate the disturbance of their roots well. It's best to sow these seeds in their final growing location or in a container from which they can be moved without disturbing the root ball.
Requires Scarification: Scarification involves physically breaking, scratching, or softening the seed coat to allow water absorption and germination to occur. This can be done by nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper.
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water.
