Spartium junceum, also known as Spanish broom, rush broom, or weaver's broom, is a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family. It is the only species in its genus and is closely related to other broom plants. This deciduous shrub can grow up to 4 meters tall and has thick, grey-green shoots with small leaves. It produces fragrant yellow flowers in late spring and summer, followed by black seed pods in late summer. Native to the Mediterranean, it is now considered an invasive species in areas with a similar climate. Despite this, it is still widely used as an ornamental plant and has even received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In Bolivia and Peru, it is known as retama and has cultural significance for indigenous communities. The plant also has various practical uses, such as for its essential oil and fibers for cloth.
