Lonicera hypoglauca, commonly called yínhuā in Chinese pharmacopoeias, is used in traditional medicine primarily as an infusion or decoction for clearing heat and supporting detoxification. Among Han Chinese practitioners documented in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, the flower buds and open flowers are simmered into a tea or decoction taken in small doses to ease sore throat and feverish discomfort. In the diaspora communities of Taiwan, similar preparations of yínhuā flowers have been recorded in the Taiwanese Pharmacopoeia and by Huang’s 1999 compendium of Chinese medicinal plants. In northern Thailand, ethnic hill‑tribe herbalists prepare a decoction of the fresh or dried flowers and sometimes apply a cooled infusion as a wash on skin irritations, as reported by Anderson’s 1986 field ethnobotanical study of northern Thai medicinal plants.
For a simple medicinal tea, steep 3–6 g of dried L. hypoglauca flower buds and open flowers in 250 ml of near‑boiling water for 10–15 minutes, then strain and drink while warm. The Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China describes the traditional dose range as 6–15 g of dried flowers per day, divided in two or three infusions; limit use to short periods (generally one to two weeks) and avoid if you are pregnant. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to honeysuckle species should refrain from use, and those taking anticoagulants or sedatives should consult a practitioner, because well‑known constituents like chlorogenic acid may interact with certain drugs. Alcoholic extracts of the species are also prepared as 1:5 (herb to solvent, w/v) tinctures in 45–60% ethanol, macerated for 2–4 weeks with periodic shaking, yielding a final alcohol concentration suitable for medicinal use under supervision.
The known activity of L. hypoglauca is plausibly related to well‑established constituents in its flowers and buds: chlorogenic acid, luteolin, luteolin‑7‑O‑glucoside, quercetin, quercetin‑3‑O‑glucoside, and a pattern of caffeic and ferulic acid derivatives. Tang and Eisenbrand’s 1992 review of Chinese drugs of plant origin lists chlorogenic acid and flavonoids as prominent in L. hypoglauca, consistent with modern analyses that show these phenolics as major markers. Huang’s Chinese Medicinal Plants further corroborates these compounds in cultivated and wild material.
Modern relevance follows the traditional trail: dried L. hypoglauca flower buds and open flowers are widely available as commercial “yínhuā” tea, and the species continues to be cultivated for herbal products that are standardized for chlorogenic acid and related markers (Zhao and Guo, 2006). Contemporary research explores anti‑inflammatory and antiviral properties of these constituents in vitro and in animal studies, but human clinical evidence remains limited; as always, products should be sourced from reputable suppliers that adhere to quality standards documented in pharmacopoeias.
