In traditional Chinese medicine the dried flower buds of Lonicera confusa are prepared as a mild tea or as a decoction to clear heat, soothe sore throat, and reduce fever. The Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2020) records that the buds are steeped in hot water as a tea for early febrile conditions, and the same material is boiled for 20‑30 minutes as a decoction in the classic formula Yin Qiao San (Bensky, Clavey and Stoger, 2004). Among the Miao people of Guizhou province the buds are boiled in water for about 15 minutes and the resulting liquid is taken three times a day to treat cough and heat‑related skin eruptions (Miao, Liu and Sun, 2015). In Korean Kampo the dried buds are listed in the Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia (2002) as a heat‑clearing decoction given for acute respiratory infections.

To make a simple Lonicera confusa infusion, place 5 g of dried flower buds into a cup, pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water (≈ 95 °C) over them, cover and steep for 5–10 minutes. Strain and drink while warm. For a stronger decoction, combine 10 g of buds with 500 ml of water, bring to a boil, simmer for 15 minutes, cool slightly and drink 200 ml of the liquid. The usual adult dose of the tea is 1–2 cups per day. Safety note: the herb contains chlorogenic acid and other phenolic acids that may modestly affect platelet aggregation, so it should be avoided in the first trimester of pregnancy and used with caution in people taking anticoagulant medication.

Phytochemical investigations of Lonicera confusa consistently report chlorogenic acid, 3,4‑dicaffeoyl‑quinic acid, caffeic acid, luteolin‑7‑O‑β‑D‑glucoside, the iridoid glycoside loganin, and a modest amount of volatile essential oils rich in α‑terpineol. These compounds are well documented in the literature (Zhang et al., 2018; Liu and Wang, 2019) and are believed to underlie the tea’s antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory and mild antiviral activities.

In recent years Lonicera confusa has attracted scientific attention for its anti‑influenza and anti‑inflammatory properties, with several peer‑reviewed studies confirming activity of chlorogenic acid and luteolin derivatives (Sun et al., 2021). The dried buds are still sold in Chinese herb markets and appear in over‑the‑counter formulas such as Lianhua Qingwen and Yin Qiao San, reflecting a continued blend of traditional use and modern research.
