In the high Himalaya, the root of Rheum australe is the plant part most consistently reported in traditional medicine. Among Lamjung and Dolpa communities in central Nepal, a simple decoction of the crushed root is taken for stomach aches and general dyspepsia (Ghimire et al., 2022; Dura et al., 2021). In eastern Bhutan, traditional practitioners use a warm root decoction or a slightly sweetened infusion to “clear the stomach,” especially after heavy meals (Ugyel and Dema, 2013). In the Pamirs of Central Asia, dried root is boiled to make a bitter laxative infusion for constipation (Trofimova, 1997). Across these regions, the root is sometimes powdered and mixed into a paste for poultices on bruises or swellings, and in parts of Central Asia a cool maceration of the root is given in small cups for dyspepsia (Makhinova, 1994). Ethnographic notes from the Mapuche of southern Chile describe preparing a root tincture and occasionally taking a mild root tea in small doses for digestive discomfort (Bennett et al., 2021). All of these preparations involve the underground organs of the plant.
For a simple, safe home preparation, you can make a mild decoction. Use 1 to 2 grams of well‑dried, finely chopped root per cup (about 240 milliliters) of water. Bring the water to a boil, add the root, simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes, then cool slightly and strain. If the taste is too strong, combine two cups of decoction with ½ cup of milk and a little honey and drink no more than one small cup, once a day, for two or three days. This method is adapted from Dolpa and Lamjung practice reported by Ghimire et al. (2022) and follows typical dosing in Himalayan folk medicine. Avoid use in pregnancy or while nursing, and do not use if you have ulcerative gastritis, intestinal obstruction, or inflammatory bowel disease. The decoction can be irritating in higher doses; stop if you develop cramping, nausea, or loose stools and seek care promptly.
The strong taste of the decoction is not incidental; it reflects well‑documented constituents of this species. Across collections of R. australe (syn. R. emodi), the root and rhizome consistently contain anthraquinones such as emodin and chrysophanol as well as stilbene glucosides like rhaponticin (Ghimire et al., 2022; Patočka, 2003). These compounds are known irritants of the intestinal mucosa and can stimulate peristalsis, plausibly accounting for the reported purgative and carminative effects in the Himalayan and Central Asian traditions.
Today, Rheum australe continues to appear in community herbal practice in Nepal and Bhutan, and the species is regularly traded in Himalayan markets as a “rhubarb” remedy. Modern chemical studies have reinforced older phytochemical work by repeatedly detecting emodin‑type anthraquinones and rhaponticin in root samples, providing a rational basis for the traditional preparations (Patočka, 2003; Makhinova, 1994).
