Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 report the use of an infusion of the whole plant in a lactagogue tea. In the Middle East and North Africa, Ibn al-Baytar’s 13th-century pharmacopoeia documents decoctions of the aerial parts for urinary complaints and as a gentle laxative. Classical Egyptian sources compiled by Riffa al‑Hasan describe external fomentations of fresh aerial parts for inflamed skin and rheumatic pains. Across South Asia, the Indian Materia Medica lists a decoction of the plant for colic and dysentery. Together these records show a clear pattern of infusions, decoctions, fomentations and poultices of the aerial parts for lactation, urinary and digestive comfort, and topical inflammation.
One practical recipe is a mild diuretic/gentle laxative tea. Place 5–7 g of dried aerial parts in 250 ml of water and simmer gently for 10–12 minutes; strain and drink 1–2 cups daily for short‑term relief of mild constipation or urinary discomfort. This aligns with the Middle Eastern and North African decoction practice (Ibn al‑Baytar) and with Egyptian/Indian uses of the same plant parts. Individuals with known sensitivity to the plant, those with severe renal disease, and pregnant or nursing women should seek professional guidance before using it.
Well‑established constituents in this species include flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives, C‑glycosyl flavones (vitexin, isovitexin), phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid), tannins, saponins, and mucilage polysaccharides. These chemicals plausibly underlie the mild laxative and diuretic effect recorded in traditional sources (Boulos, Flora of Egypt; Ibn al‑Baytar; Indian Materia Medica).
Modern relevance: Seeds are sometimes sold locally as a wild edible, and dried aerial parts can be obtained from herbal suppliers in North Africa and the Levant. Current pharmacological studies are limited but include experimental work on diuretic and anti‑inflammatory activity; nonetheless, documented ethnobotanical preparation continues in Morocco, Egypt, India and among Mapuche communities.
