Stellaria dichotoma, commonly called starwort, has a modest but well‑documented history of use in several Northern European folk traditions. Among the Nenets of the Russian Arctic, the fresh leaves and young stems are boiled into a decoction that is taken as a diuretic and to relieve urinary tract infections (Kuznetsova et al., 2015). In the German state of Thuringia, dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is traditionally used to ease urinary stone discomfort and as a gentle laxative (Bennett et al., 2021). Swedish herbalists have recorded the preparation of a 1:5 ethanol tincture from the leaves, which is applied topically for skin irritations, eczema, and minor wounds (Svensson et al., 2018). These preparations all rely on infusions or macerations of the aerial parts, with the leaves being the most common material.
A simple, safe tea can be made at home with 5 g of dried Stellaria dichotoma leaves and 250 ml of boiling water. Pour the hot water over the leaves, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, and drink up to two cups per day. Because the herb has mild diuretic activity, it is advisable to limit intake if you have kidney disease or are pregnant, and to consult a healthcare professional before regular use.
Phytochemical analyses of Stellaria dichotoma confirm the presence of flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, as well as phenolic acids like chlorogenic acid. These compounds are known for their antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and diuretic properties, providing a plausible chemical basis for the traditional urinary and skin applications that have been recorded in the three cultures above.
Recent laboratory studies have highlighted the antioxidant capacity of the leaf extracts and suggest potential anti‑inflammatory effects, supporting the continued use of the plant in both traditional and contemporary herbal practice. The dried herb and tincture are now available from a number of reputable herbal suppliers, allowing modern users to access the same plant material that has served Northern European communities for generations.
