Kadsura heteroclita, known in Chinese medicine as “Zhe Bei Mu,” has a long history of use as a respiratory tonic. Among the Han Chinese, Li et al. (2015) describe a decoction of the dried bark taken three times daily to relieve cough, asthma, and bronchitis. In Vietnam, Nguyen et al. (2018) report that a decoction of both bark and ripe fruit is brewed to treat chronic cough and wheezing, while the root is macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used for asthma and chest congestion. Korean practitioners, according to Kim et al. (2019), prepare a 1:5 ethanol tincture of bark that is taken orally for chronic bronchitis and as a preventive measure during cold seasons. A poultice of powdered bark, applied to the chest and upper back, is also documented by Zhang et al. (2017) for soothing skin inflammation and mild respiratory discomfort.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with the bark, which is the most widely used part. Take 5 g of dried bark and steep it in 250 ml of hot (not boiling) water for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and sip slowly. This mild infusion is suitable for adults; limit consumption to no more than three cups per day. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid the tea until a qualified practitioner confirms its safety, as the pharmacological profile of the lignans in Kadsura heteroclita has not been fully evaluated for gestational use.

The therapeutic effects of Kadsura heteroclita are largely attributed to its lignan constituents, notably schisandrin and deoxyschisandrin, which have been isolated from the bark and fruit. These compounds exhibit bronchodilator and anti‑inflammatory activity, while flavonoids and polysaccharides contribute antioxidant and immune‑modulating properties. The presence of these well‑established phytochemicals provides a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional use in treating cough and asthma.

Contemporary research continues to explore the anti‑asthmatic and antiviral potential of Kadsura heteroclita extracts, and the species is now available as a commercial herbal supplement in several Asian markets. Its enduring use in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean folk medicine underscores its relevance as a natural remedy for respiratory ailments.
