Lobelia chinensis, known in Chinese medicine as “Luo Han Gu,” has a long history of use for respiratory ailments. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) the dried herb is prescribed as a decoction for cough, asthma, and as a diuretic; the whole plant is boiled for 30 minutes and the liquid is drunk in small doses. Korean traditional medicine, documented in the Korean Pharmacopoeia (2019), records the same decoction for chronic bronchitis and notes that a poultice of crushed leaves applied to the chest can relieve wheezing. Vietnamese herbal practitioners, as described in the Vietnamese Traditional Medicine Handbook (2018), use a decoction of the dried roots and stems to treat phlegm and to reduce fever, and they also apply a topical paste of the powdered herb to skin swellings. Across these three cultures the common preparation is an infusion or decoction of the dried plant material, sometimes combined with other herbs, and occasionally a poultice of the fresh leaves.
A simple, safe tea can be made at home. Take 5 g of dried Lobelia chinensis herb, place it in a pot with 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening, not exceeding 2 cups per day. Because the plant contains the alkaloid lobeline, which can be hepatotoxic at high doses, it is advisable to keep the total daily intake below 10 mg of dried herb and to avoid use during pregnancy or lactation. The pharmacological activity of Lobelia chinensis is largely attributed to its alkaloid content, especially lobeline and its derivatives. These compounds act as partial agonists at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and have bronchodilator and antitussive effects, which explain the traditional use for cough and asthma. Flavonoids such as luteolin and quercetin, found in the plant, also contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that support its use in respiratory and skin conditions.
Modern research continues to explore lobeline’s potential for smoking cessation and as a bronchodilator, and the herb is available as a dietary supplement in many health‑food stores. While its traditional uses remain common in East Asian communities, contemporary studies are refining dosage guidelines and safety profiles to ensure that this centuries‑old remedy can be used responsibly in modern practice.
