The project is coordinated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia.
In the United States, the Mediterranean cypress is also planted as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks. It is used in the southeastern United States as a Christmas tree. The foliage is also used by florists for wreaths and other decorations.
In addition to its ornamental uses, the Mediterranean cypress has a long history of practical uses. Its wood is highly durable and resistant to decay, making it useful for construction and shipbuilding. It was also used in distilleries for making alcohol before the invention of stainless steel. The tree's foliage has also been used in cosmetics for its astringent, firming, and anti-aging properties.
In terms of cultural significance, the Mediterranean cypress has been associated with death and mourning in various cultures, including ancient Greece and Rome, as well as in Jewish and Muslim traditions. In popular culture, it is often stereotypically associated with vacation destinations in the Mediterranean region, particularly Italy.
Overall, the Mediterranean cypress is a long-lived, coniferous evergreen tree with a conic crown and dense, dark green foliage. It is native to the eastern Mediterranean region, but has been widely cultivated as an orn
