Toona sinensis, known in China as “Sangshen,” is traditionally brewed as a soothing tea to relieve cough, sore throat, and mild fever. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020), dried leaves are steeped in hot water to produce a decoction that is drunk for respiratory ailments. In Vietnam, the same leaves are macerated in alcohol to create a tincture used by the Hmong people for digestive upset and as a mild diuretic (Nguyen et al., 2015). Thai practitioners of traditional medicine also prepare a decoction from the bark and fruit of Toona sinensis to treat colds and reduce inflammation, a practice documented in the Thai Traditional Medicine Journal (2018). In each culture, the primary plant part used is the leaf, with occasional use of bark or fruit for more potent preparations.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with 5 g of dried leaves, 250 ml of boiling water, and a steeping time of 5–10 minutes. After steeping, strain the liquid and drink warm. This mild infusion is generally well tolerated, but pregnant women should avoid it because the plant contains compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions. If you have a history of allergies to citrus or related plants, test a small amount first, as the leaves contain limonoids that can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

The therapeutic effects of Toona sinensis are largely attributed to its rich profile of limonoids, such as sinensetin and limonin, which have documented anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Flavonoids, particularly quercetin and kaempferol, are also present and contribute to the plant’s antiviral and anti‑cancer activities. Terpenoids, including various sesquiterpenes, add to the overall anti‑infective potential of the tea and tincture. These constituents have been isolated and quantified in peer‑reviewed phytochemical studies, providing a clear biochemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Modern research continues to explore Toona sinensis’s medicinal potential. Recent in‑vitro studies have shown that extracts of the leaves inhibit the growth of several bacterial strains and reduce inflammatory cytokine production, supporting their use in respiratory and digestive disorders. Commercially, the dried leaves are available in health‑food stores and online as a ready‑to‑brew tea, and the tincture is sold as a natural remedy for digestive health. The plant remains an active component of both traditional practice and contemporary herbal markets, bridging centuries of use with ongoing scientific inquiry.

General Uses Top

Wood and fiber:
The light reddish-brown, moderately hard wood is used for furniture, interior joinery, cabinetry, flooring, veneer, and plywood in China and neighboring regions. It produces a bleachable kraft pulp suitable for printing and writing papers, with fiber morphology typical of meliaceous hardwoods suitable for high-brightness pulp. The wood is typically air-dry at about 0.5–0.65 g·cm⁻³.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Young leaves and shoots are consumed as a leafy vegetable (known as “xiangchun” or “chù shǔ yè”), typically blanched or stir-fried and used in packaged ready-to-eat products; the product form is fresh or frozen leaves/shoots.

Properties relevant to use:
The wood’s moderate density and relatively straightforward pulping behavior underpin its suitability for furniture and pulp; fiber and vessel dimensions align with typical meliaceous hardwoods used in kraft pulping.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The species is planted for timber and leaves in agroforestry and plantation systems across East and Southeast Asia. Plantations typically supply the sawmilling and pulp markets, and leaf production is sourced from managed leaf crops.

Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water.
