Pyrus bourgaeana provides genetic material used in Rosaceae systematics and pear breeding studies. It is included in population-genetic and phylogenetic analyses of wild Pyrus species and serves as a taxonomic outgroup in comparative genomics of subfamily Amygdaloideae (e.g., family-wide divergence estimates and gene family evolution). Whole-genome sequencing and re-sequencing of Iberian Pyrus accessions (including P. bourgaeana) have been used to construct reference data resources for downstream analyses of diversity, selection, and genomic prediction in cultivated pears. Accessions are maintained in European germplasm collections, enabling comparative studies and enabling integration with bioinformatic databases focused on Rosaceae genomics and marker-assisted breeding.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Pyrus bourgaeana occurs naturally in southwestern Iberia. Seed and cuttings are supplied by regional germplasm repositories and restoration networks for ecological plantings and habitat creation; supply is regionally constrained, and plant material is locally sourced. The species is recognized in conservation frameworks (e.g., national Red Lists and European habitats directive Annex II) in parts of its range, with wild collection subject to regional permits. Seedlots may be offered under national and EU rules governing forest reproductive material; certification and chain-of-custody documentation ensure provenance traceability for restoration planting.
